History Made: Nitin Sondhi Smashes Highest Individual Score in BCMCL History
In the long and storied legacy of the British Columbia Mainland Cricket League (BCMCL), few performances have stood out quite like this one. On August 9, 2014, in a Division 4 regular season match between Newton Surrey II and Ahmadiyya Cricket Club II, a record was etched into the books that remains unmatched to this day.
Nitin Sondhi, opening the batting for Newton Surrey II, delivered a marathon performance that defied expectations, logic, and cricketing convention. In a stunning display of skill, concentration, and sheer determination, Sondhi scored 258 runs off 258 balls, anchoring his team to an extraordinary total of 489 for 5 in 45 overs.
This innings stands tall as the highest ever individual score in BCMCL historyâa monumental feat that still resonates across the Lower Mainland cricket community, more than a decade later.
 A Wall of Runs
The numbers themselves are staggering. Facing exactly as many deliveries as his final run tally, Sondhi demonstrated remarkable consistency and patience. But this was no slow grindâhis knock included 22 fours and 21 sixes, which accounted for 210 runs just in boundaries. The rest were the result of sharp running and relentless stamina, an aspect often underappreciated in innings of this scale.
Whatâs even more striking is the context: Newton Surrey II was playing in a 40-over league match. However, due to rain delays earlier in the season and adjusted conditions, the match had been allotted 45 overs per side. Even then, to score nearly 500 runs in a limited-overs format is a feat of its own. Sondhiâs contribution alone made up more than half of the teamâs runs.
 Total Dominance
Newton Surrey II’s 489/5 remains one of the highest team scores ever recorded in BCMCL. The opposition, Ahmadiyya Cricket Club II, were never in the hunt. Chasing a mountain of runs, they were bundled out for 56 runs in 16.2 overs, handing Newton Surrey II a mammoth 433-run victory.
This margin of victory is among the largest in league history and underscores the complete dominance Newton Surrey II asserted that day.
 A Legacy Performance
Records in league cricket donât just represent milestonesâthey tell stories. And Nitin Sondhiâs 258 is more than just a number; itâs a tale of unwavering focus, boundary-hitting brilliance, and a player rising to an occasion that few could have foreseen.
For young cricketers in the BCMCL circuit, this innings serves as inspiration. It proves that opportunities to create history exist at every level of the game. You donât have to be on a national squad or playing under stadium lightsâsometimes, all it takes is one day, one bat, and one mind determined to push limits.
